Havens Park

Project Description

Havens Park is a 65-acre park located in the northwest part of Leavenworth, Kansas. The park is heavily wooded with over 200 feet of vertical elevation change across the site. According to the City's Parks and Recreation Department, the park is an underutilized natural resource within the community. Many ideas for the park have been put forth over the years, but no long-range plan had been developed. The City requested Schwab Eaton assist them in the creation of a park master plan.

The Havens Park Master Plan incorporates many elements important to the community. Important issues included, preserving the natural qualities of the park, enable law enforcement access for park security, improve ADA accessibility, provide amenities that will enhance park usability (e.g. restrooms, water service), and ease of maintenance.

The master plan includes a playground, restrooms, shelter, picnic areas, trailhead, a network of hard-surfaced and natural trails, scenic overlook, a stone amphitheater in an area previously used as a limestone quarry, primitive camping areas, and an outdoor education center for native plant studies. A site is also designated for a future nature center. Parking is generally confined to the perimeter of the park.
