Schwab Eaton collaborated with KDOT, the Nature Conservancy, and the Konza Center on this scenic overlook south of Manhattan, Kansas, on Highway 177. Visitors to the overlook can enjoy views of the Konza Prairie and the Kansas River valley, and read about the geology and history of the Flint Hills. The site was developed to foster an appreciation of the regional landscape and history among the general public. Schwab Eaton designed and prepared construction documents for the open-air visitor’s pavilion, interpretive markers, access drive, parking, and trails. Priorities included protection of environmentally sensitive areas by minimizing disturbance, restoring disturbed areas, controlling access, and providing for efficient maintenance procedures.
