Newton Depot Park is located in the heart of Newton’s downtown historic district in front of Newton’s historic Newton Station, which was built in 1920-30 during the depression. This was the fourth depot in Newton on the AT&SF Railway. For many years it housed the famous Harvey House Restaurant. Today, Newton Station not only houses the ticket office, waiting rooms and baggage room, but also serves as a thriving location for several professional offices. Schwab Eaton assisted the City of Newton by developing a master plan for renovation of this small plaza area. Plaza improvements included new paving, a three-tiered fountain encircled with planter seating areas, trash receptacles, matching benches, site lighting, lawn areas and landscaping. The plan provided a more direct, as well as inviting, entrance to the depot from Main and 5th Streets. It provides a pleasant, relaxed setting for those coming to Newton Station or businesses within the building. It also makes the wait for the bus a more enjoyable experience, and is an oasis for the tired downtown shopper. It was a much-needed enhancement to the downtown historical district.
