Great Bend Sports Complex

Project Description

Great Bend is a community that loves baseball and has a long history of successful teams and players. Due to demand, the City developed one ball field on the site prior to Schwab Eaton’s involvement in the project. A master plan was prepared to guide the City as they developed the remainder of the 60-acre parcel into a premiere sports facility, capable of hosting regional tournaments as well as serving local recreation programs. The public was invited to participate in the design process at several meetings and a two-day design charrette. Schwab Eaton designers prepared alternative concepts and presented them to the public during the charrette. Public feedback was incorporated into the final master plan.

Major improvements include four competition and two practice softball/baseball diamonds, batting cages and warm-up areas, two youth soccer and two youth football fields, a perimeter walking/bicycle path, parking for 660 cars, drop-off area, and restroom, concession, and maintenance buildings. Proposed ponds will serve as visual amenities and important storm water management areas. Other elements include picnic pavilions, playgrounds, entry features and signage, and naturalized open space.

Phase One, comprised primarily of the baseball/softball quad, several ponds, and parking for approximately 200 vehicles, is complete. This phase was divided into smaller construction packages with the Owner essentially functioning as the general contractor. Additional phases are planned as funding is available.
