Valley Heights Sports Complex

Project Description

Valley Heights is a 2A school serving the communities of Blue Rapids and Waterville in Marshall County, Kansas. For decades, Valley Heights' student athletes had competed off-campus in on old stadium in Waterville. School administrators and community leaders envisioned a new sports facility on the site of the Jr/Sr High School. Schwab Eaton worked with them to reach this goal. Schwab Eaton met with coaches and administrators to master plan the improvements and establish a budget. After a bond issue and sales tax referendum were passed, Schwab Eaton completed the design of a new football/track sports complex, and coordinated the building of the project.

Major improvements included a natural-turf football field, irrigation system, scoreboard, lighting, concessions, restrooms, home and visitor bleacher seating to accommodate 1,000 spectators, an eight-lane synthetic surface 400-meter track with high jump area, discus, shot put, and javelin areas, and four long jump/triple jump pits. In addition to home football games and track and field meets, these facilities put Valley Heights High School in a position to host football play-off games and regional track and field meets. On September 25, 2009, the Mustangs celebrated the grand opening of the new facilities and a 46 to 20 Homecoming game victory.

This project received two awards. Shilling Construction was awarded 1st place in the category of 2009 Commercial/Industrial Paving, while Schwab Eaton was recognized with an Engineering Excellence Award through the Kansas Section of the American Consulting Engineers Council.
