Project Description

Allen County had an Off-System Bridge located three-miles west of Humboldt that was a fracture critical, functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridge. Schwab Eaton performed a preliminary study for replacing the bridge in a cost effective manner that would reduce traffic accidents occurring at the location. We worked with KDOT and various environmental agencies to come up with three alternatives. The alternates included 1) moving the bridge while creating a major channel change, 2) keeping the same bridge location and constructing the approaches and bridge on a horizontally curved alignment, and 3) keeping the same bridge location but constructing the bridge on a tangent with sufficient width and superelevation to allow for the two approach curves ending on either end of the bridge. The third alternate was selected. A 48’-64’-48’ Continuous Reinforced Concrete Haunch Slab Bridge with a 32’ roadway was used to replace a 65’ Steel Thru Truss Bridge with a 14’ roadway. Schwab Eaton worked with the adjacent landowners to accommodate construction requests and alleviate concerns regarding right-of-way and construction impact. We also worked with a local agency to assist them in moving the existing steel truss bridge for use on a hike and bike trail.
