Project Description
North Manhattan Avenue is a primary corridor for traffic entering and leaving Kansas State University and the Research Park. In earlier construction phases, the City of Manhattan had upgraded the two-lane, open ditch road to a four-lane curb and gutter section from Kimball Avenue southward to Research Park Drive, providing additional roadway capacity for the new Department of Agriculture building and the expansion of the Research Park.
Phase 3A and 3B extended the new four-lane section southward to Claflin Road. Phase 3A realigned the intersection of Baker’s Way and North Manhattan Avenue to a high point and lowered the profile of North Manhattan Avenue at the intersection to improve sight distance. Phase 3B completed the four-lane section to the intersection of North Manhattan Avenue and Claflin Road, including reconstruction of side-street intersections, reconstruction of the Claflin intersection, and new traffic signals to match the lane configurations. Each phase of construction occurred primarily during summer months to minimize impact on the University traffic. Completed in September of 2020, the North Manhattan Avenue improvements will provide added capacity and increased safety along this major corridor.
