Project Description
North Manhattan Avenue is a major corridor for traffic entering and leaving Kansas State University and the Research Park. With recent expansion of the KSU Research Park and the construction of the new Department of Agriculture building, the City of Manhattan realized that the existing two-lane, open ditch section needed improvement. Challenges included maintaining access for the local citizens, and a compressed construction window to insure that full closures of the road only occurred while the University was on Summer Break.
Schwab Eaton provided a traffic study, field surveys, preliminary concepts, design, plan preparation and specifications for the first portion of this project, from Kimball Avenue, south 1,700 feet, past the intersection of Research Park Drive/Keen Street. Construction included 11,240 square yards of 10” thick concrete pavement to form a 4-lane arterial roadway with a taper at the south end, ready for a future extension of the new construction. Side streets were re-constructed as well, with over 1,400 square yards of 6” concrete to improve the grades and intersections with Keen Street, Blue Hills Road, Flint Hills Place and Research Park Drive. SE also designed the new traffic signal installation at the intersection of Research Park Drive/Keen Street, and signal modifications at the intersection with Kimball Avenue. The project was opened for use on time and has exceeded expectations with regard to traffic flow improvements. Future phases will extend the new road section south to Claflin Road.
