Project Description
Kimball Avenue between Vanesta Drive and Hudson Avenue had seen drastically increased traffic volumes since the development of Grand Mere and Colbert Hills golf course. It was also a major route for event traffic around the west side of town. The two-lane surface meant that vehicles turning along this corridor obstructed the through traffic. Rear-end collisions were becoming a common occurrence.
The City of Manhattan recognized that it was time to add a center turn lane to the corridor as well as right turn lanes at certain locations. This would allow turning movements to proceed without conflict and increase the safety of the corridor. Schwab Eaton (SE) was hired to design an additional lane throughout the corridor. During preliminary design, the City asked SE to perform a 5-lane Concept study along this route to determine whether a 10’ multi-use trail could be constructed adjacent to the road, connecting the Hudson trail to the trail system west of Vanesta Drive. Following review of the 5-Lane Concept, the City increased SE’s scope to include design of the 10’ trail, curb and gutter and storm sewer improvements, all on the north side of Kimball.
Completed in 2019, this project will increase the safety, driveability, and pedestrian connectivity of the Kimball Avenue corridor.
